Day Two - 8/9. Parked at small car park at the bottom of common just below rifle range. Walked up along PROW. Pillar sits at top of hill overlooking the marshland. Trig is in good condition with spider and FB intact.

This was my final Trig in the Ordnance Survey Map Area SZ, and a nice one to finish on. As you're not supposed to cycle, I pushed my bike a pleasant kilometre through woodland along the ridge from the Blackwater Hill pillar. Great views over the Avon Valley and a really clear sight of The Needles on the IOW.

Parked at end of Sandy Lane, headed into woods and uphill. Went to the wrong side of the firing range to start, it was up a hill then down again and up the other side. Another wrong turn to left, fairly easy find in the end, should have turned right, prominent spot with views to the east across the Avon valley and towards the Needles. Direction plinth nearby, helpful.

Pleasant walk due North from B road. Met a lovely lady there who'd been visiting the spot for 25 years but had no idea that it was a trig pillar. Very nice views over the Avon Valley.

Keeping to the logging roads (and marked BW) that you can cycle on. I got to this trig quite easily. Rather a lot of No Cycles signs around here. Very nice views over to IOW.

Interesting ridge, walked along from Blackwater Hill picking up the 2 intersected stns on the way. Lovely views over the Avon flood plain to the E. Pillar found in mixed woodland, unusually off-set on large concrete plinth. Cap missing, no plug; front sight hole sealled, other 3 open. Minor chipping to 3 of the top edges.

Lovely walk down from Blackwater Hill on a good track through the woods. Excellent views of the Avon valley, Hengistbury Head, and the Needles from here, plus a helpful topograph. However, persistent gun shots from the adjacent firing range rather disconcerting! All except NW s/hole open, centre also open, but otherwise vgc.

Walked up St.Catherine's Hill from Fairmile noting an old disused railway crossing (crumbling huge concrete posts and traces of the old track). Paths criss-crossed each other; very sandy underfoot. Gorse bushes, heather and birch trees predominating (yellow, purple & silver!)

An elevated pillar on a sandy knoll that has now been converted into a viewing area with a rail fence. The pillar is in good condition apart from a missing plug and stands on a concrete plinth. The views are good but would probably be better in winter.

The tarmac plug has been pushed through. Set on a concrete plinth, it was once painted white. Good views and you can see the trig at Winkton Common with a pair of binoculars.
