Horses in roadside field at the start of the PROW were very curious about me, but they didn't hinder my progress to the farm track. Pillar easily spotted and reached when at far end of track. Pillar in good condition, but in an unspectacular location in the middle of a field. Saw farmer driving along track on return to car - unlike his horses, he didn't seem bothered by my presence.

Parked bike in lane to east of pub at crossroads. On foot east along a shaded uneven byway, rising steadily, after about 600 metres reaches footpath heading south beside a field, after about 500 metres reaches a couple of barns, pillar about a hundred metres further on in field to south west. Harvested recently so just stubble. Farmer nearby on tractor. Slight lean on pillar.

Parked near The Shears Inn pub to the E of Collingbourne Ducis, then walked E on the track. Very muddy everywhere today. Followed Jon Glew's top tip and turned right into the field at point 'A' on the attached satellite image. Trig on concrete plinth, centrecap missing, in good condition except that it's leaning. Front sighthole closed, all other sightholes open. I left a 2p coin in the rear sighthole for the next visitor to find.

More pheasants around the buildings near the TP. While cycling back I saw some solders in Camouflage uniform with High Vis tabards over the top. I asked one of them why and they said "that is how the Army works now. Its health and safety because we are on the road giving out water to the runners." I came across the runner a bit further up the road coming the other way. Ones at the back were more friendly ans would say Hi, then the front runners.

Beautiful summer's day for a 12ml circular walk from Ludgershall. Trig has good all round views, including Sidbury Hill. Centre and three s/holes open, but otherwise vgc. Onwards to Wexcombe Down via Collingbourne Wood. Loads of butterflies but ROW in the woods are surprisingly overgrown, very brambley and nettled, and most definitely not recommended for the be-shorted!

Parking a bit awkward, found a roadside slot at the junction of minor roads to the east of Collingbourne Ducis. Walked east on a byway towards Collingbourne Wood. Top Tip: Turn right at the first field entrance and follow the field boundary to Wick Down as the prow marked on the OS maps that disects the field doesn't exist and muddy boots awaits anyone taking that route! Pillar is 75m into a recently planted turnip field, so difficult to avoid some mud. Pillar is in reasonable condition, some slight chipping from one of the top edges; the metal centre cap is missing, 3 sight holes open, the one beneath the FB is sealed. Extensive views, south in particular.

The pillar was hiding in a bean field on a small hill between the village of Collingbourne Ducis and the town of Ludgershall. I parked at Ludgershall Castle and walked to the trig along the tracks through Collingbourne Wood and returned along the bridleway on the downs next to the woods. It lacks a cap or plug; has FB S1927 and the foundations of its base are exposed by up to 8 inches. From the pillar woods can be seen nearby to the east and various downland ridges and hill tops are on the horizon above the crop in other directions; Sidbury Hill is prominent in the southwest. The view will be better after harvest. Ludgershall Castle consists of the remains a medieval royal hunting lodge and associated earthworks; various butterflies were flitting around the hedgerows on the perimeter of the woodland; several jets passed overhead during my walk and a military helicopter was flying around Silbury Hill.
