Permission granted from farm lady. Pointed out the route and requested to close any gates behind (which goes without saying) and to return the same way. Parked at the bottom of grange Farm next to cottages. Follow road up until met gate to left before line of trees. Followed track through field, trig visible, through one gate. Trig 4 of 7. - !!! BE WARNED !!! -followed google maps, which took me down a track just off Hardings Lane (turn next to ramblers barn). Do not attempt if you like your car or don’t drive a 4x4… very tight in places (evidence of previous cars hitting trees trying to get past), uneven and high centred track. It did then join Reynards lane, which was the lane I followed all the way back

I hiked 19.2 miles in the White Peak area of Staffordshire starting with a visit to Thors Cave before bagging 5 of the Peak District 88 trigs along the way. That makes a total of 60 of them so far. I came to this one via a single track lane and signs stating on this date (there was no date) the PROW had been revoked. With that in mind I was really surprised to see a National Trust plaque on the pillar, suggesting it was a NT monument and possibly the land is owned by them. It always annoys me when a PROW is revoked let alone the thought of it being possibly on NT land. I had a steep ascent to the pillar with spectacular panoramic views. It was in good condition albeit the foundations were slightly exposed and the original centre for the spider has been replaced with a plain disc. I thought this trig was 10 but I deducted a point for the revoked right of way.

A 2 hour evening walk from Hartington via Beresford and Wolfscote Dale. Open access to the E of Wolfscote Grange, then a short pull up the hill will bring you to this trig with the most fantastic views in all directions. Continued NE and picked up the path joining Reynards Lane. The Duke of Devonshire established a creamery in Hartington in the 1870s. In the 1900s and ran by the Nuttall family it became world famous and in the 1930s it was 1 of the 3 counties allowed to produce Blue Stilton, much later it was given PDO status by the EU. The factory closed in 2009, however a "reinvented" creamery was established in 2012 producing Peakland White and Blue and in 2014 the first Blue Stilton in 5 years. So I gift this lovely trig to my favourite cheese of all time, Blue Stilton.....Johnny Foreigner cant match it.

The trig is located on NT access land, but i found "access" barred by a barbed wire fence meaning me and my dad had to walk to the end of the minor road until we found a small permissive access plaque on a gate near The Whim. The gate was padlocked so we had to climb over it. A short steep climb lead to another locked gate which had to be climbed over. So much for access land. But this is why I loved this trig! Tricky to get to, unpopulated and a truly amazing viewpoint. I truly recommend this one.

Plastic plug. Public. Access Land [NT]. Peak District National Park. The adjoining part of the hill, to the north, has permissive access, so providing more options for an ascent from the road on the west side. The slopes are amazingly steep, as they tend to be in this area where the Derbyshire Dales meet the Staffordshire Moorlands.

A joint visit with Carole. We parked on the lane to the south near The Whim. We then used an 'Open Access' gateway to start our climb up to the pillar with just one other gate to go through. Pillar is in good condition but now has a replacement asphalt plug. A wonderful view point.

Another steep climb up from Wolfscote Grange – the last of a three trigpoint walk from Hartington. Was expecting to see the Whim Brewery at the Grange – it was shown on Google Maps – but it must have been relocated. Great views – retraced my steps down the hill then along Beresford Dale. Could see the three trigpoints I’d visited, Bank Top, Ecton Hill and Wolfscote Hill as I returned to Hartington. Doing a bit more investigation I see that the brewery is further down the lane at Whim Farm. Google streetview takes you right into the brewery yard.
