Good condition FBM, if a bit weathered. In a private quadrangle within Costello School. Height tag is unusually on the side of the pillar reading "324.09ft". The brass plate also reads "Ordnance Survey Height of top of pin". Not seen that before. Accessed via appointment organised in advance via email and phone.

Weekend so school closed and the FBM within the courtyard was inaccessible. Even if the school was open given the current CV19 situation I don't think they'd be keen for FBM visitors.

I walked from the station after arranging a visit with Vicki Clarke in Admin and was shown around by the caretaker who would love to know what is in the chamber below the pillar!

To be honest, I hadn't read the previous logs as I turned into the school car park. I reported to the reception desk and the lady there, Carole, didn't know about the FBM. But she called for back up and Dave appeared, who did. Dave escorted me to the FBM and we chatted. They get about 2 requests a year to see the FBM. Back at reception Carole asked me what I would have done if they had refused my request. I said, "go on to another". I think she thought I was going to make a run towards the FBM regardless or return after dark and climb over the building.

Need to go on a school day, not a weekend. Spoke with member of staff who happened to be passing - access readily given, but only when school is unlocked as FBM is located within an internal quad - no other access possible (other than over the roof!) - should have read previous logs below. I don't understand how the OS would use this if it's completely surrounded by a building. Will return. ***Revisited 20 Jan 2014. Staff readily escorted me to the FBM. Height tag fixed to main OS plate on front of FBM (324.09ft).

Rang in the morning and spoke to a friendly receptionist who arranged a visit for that afternoon. Well looked after and spent a pleasant 20 minutes chatting to the staff. Best to go outside of term time.

During planning for my visit I went on the college website and found that the PTA was having a Christmas fair. Without a Criminal Records Check I was able to walk straight past reception into the hall and looking through the windows into the courtyard could see where the thingy was.

Met Rob (Sagina nivalis) in the college car par as arranged and duly met the lady caretaker who showed us through to the FBM. It’s situated in an enclosed quadrangle and only accessible by going through the school building. It’s in excellent condition and has the height label attached to the front plate rather than adjacent to the top ‘pin’ (as this one is called). Many thanks to Rob for arranging the visit and allowing me to accompany him.

Grounds of school (Costello Tech College, Crossborough Rd), completely enclosed by buildings, accessible only by permission of caretaker. I dont recall seeing one of this pattern: usual GPS plaque but the older plaque says <HEIGHT OF TOP OF PIN> and the height tag (304.09FT) is fixed to it. The <pin> is unlettered, a little tatty, bearing the usual 3 lined BM symbol. Visited with Pharisee: Sat a.m.: rang a few days beforehand: they would be there for an hour, setting up for an event, happy to accommodate us. She said her <stone> gets a fair few visitors. Sat a.m., gates open, having seen the photos I was confident I'd go straight to the FBM - but no sign of it. There's an area closed off where a big new multistorey building is going up, and from the FBM grid ref I guess it's in the area between the existing and new buildings. Curses!!

In courtyard surrounded by school which must have been designed to leave the fbm untouched. Luckily visited during holidays and caretaker let me visit. Surprised to see its OK.
