Easy parking on A611 Derby Rd outside the grounds to the N. Walked straight in and headed for the half aeroplane which is next to the trig. No access issues at all. Pillar somewhat pebble dashed with very slight damage including no FB number. The cap is also now missing. This is an unusual trig - where did it come from?

Easy bag. Can be seen from the roadside between the tennis courts and training aircraft. Easy access to it. No centre cap and ground off numbers.

Despite having worked at the college for several years and driving past the trig pillar hundreds of times I didn’t know of it’s existence until I purchased the Notts Trig Bagger book recently. The pillar is by the tennis courts and just behind the aeroplane used to train cabin crew at the college. Roadside parking is readily available on the A611 outside the college. #1/6 today

Bagged on a detour on a hike through Thieves and Harlow Woods for its curiosity value. Slightly damaged on top of pillar. Easy access from the Uni Car Park off the A611 or across the playing fields from the south . Pillar is by the NE corner of the Tennis Courts by the recycled aircraft cabin !!

(1802) A curious one this. Not an OSGB36 pillar, but a replica constructed by the college (?) for training purposes. Readily spotted whilst driving down the A611. Made use of the Crematorium across the road for parking. Low fence to scale and from there a short walk to the pillar, which sits close to a Tennis court. All in good condition. Numbers/lettering on the FB has been ground off, though you can kinda make some of them out still. Centre cap a - nicer - replacement from the one seen in previous visiters photos.

Easy to get too, I parked along the main road then hopped over the low metal fence, pillar located next to tennis court, in good condition apart from ground off number. Not shown on map 50k or 25k or is it just mine? Is there a possibility that this is TP6274 - Sutton Resr? Moved, Just a thought, what do you think?

Last day working in Mansfield after 10 years so thought I'd mark it by logging a couple of trigs. A mining surveyor colleague has confirmed that this is almost certainly a training trig, going back to the times when Derby Rd Tech (as it was always known locally when I lived here) taught that subject to staff at the dozens of coal mines in the area in the 60s and 70s. On the basis that it is in its as-built condition (except with a replacement cap) I'm recording the condition as good, although it has no FB number (very professionally ground off). Metal cap, indented letters, all s/holes open.

Easy access from Cauldwell Road, with car park handy. The pillar is in a good position for views to the south so looks as though it should always have been here, but no! The plug with OS lettering is still in place.

Revisit. Plug has been reinstated. Standard OS lettering whereas Rod Sladen's earlier photo shows no lettering; so I guess its not the original. Intermittent sunshine.

"Nip" over the fence may be a tad uncomfortable for those of 5'2" and under like me! A new hawthorne hedge has been planted which will soon make this access option difficult. If you drive round the back, down Cauldwell Road, access via the back entrance is easy.

Strangely, the centre plug has reappeared since ted's log ! First time I've had to report the appearance rather than disappearnce of one. New extension to the college car park has come within 10m of the pillar, but it is safe - makes access even easier via college main entrance

The plug has been stolen since the previous visit just over a year ago. All sighting holes open and upper centre mark visible. Channels cut from spider-ends and hooks to edge of pillar - doesn't look like vandalism but purpose unclear. FB number removed but viewed from a distance, maybe a ghostly S_4_2 can be seen. An oddity.

been meaning to come here for a long time and finally got round to it on the way home from trigpointing in lincolnshire,easy nip over the fence from the road,also had a look at Annesley road pillar on the way home,still safe in it's compound.

Strange position in F.E. college grounds (next to tennis courts) but with some views. Concrete base seems too new/well-made/recent in comparison with pillar. Just nip over fence to get to it.

Just outside corner of tennis courts in the grounds of College, visible 20m S of A611. Standard OS pillar (i.e. Hotine): top slightly damaged (?repaired), FB with numbers apparently ground off; metal cap apparently of raised letter font but ground off?

Very interesting! No paint and a plug which looks like those with raised letters - but there are no letters! No number on flush bracket. Concrete base exposed all round. Easily seen and accessed from the A611. I must find out more about this pillar - hope to log more details soon.....

Have passed this way many times but this is the first time I have noticed the pillar, though it has evidently been there for some time. Situated at the corner of the tennis courts in the grounds of West Notts College, and clearly visible from the A611 Derby Road, it is a standard OS pillar in good condition complete with Flush Bracket, but with no number - it looks as if any original number might have been neatly ground away. Spider present, and cast-iron plug (lacking any OS lettering). All four sighting holes open and Centre clearly visible. Presumably not an original location, though a good spot close to the top of the hill with clear views in most directions. Pillar possibly moved from another site (without the FB number it will be difficult to be sure) - nearest site from which a pillar is missing is Sutton Reservoir [but GRP has pointed out that the FB style rules that out]. Did not have camera with me, but will return and photograph it in the next few days. Postcript: I have since heard from West Notts College that they believe the pillar to have been installed in the 1960s, and used on site surveying modules for the mining industry. Incidentally, OS have not been able to turn up any further information on this pillar.
