This one gave me a bit of a runaround, even though I knew roughly where to look! Invisible from the main footpath, but quickly revealed if you can find the right smaller path into the trees. Not a particularly nice location, with a couple of bits of litter scattered around it, but nevertheless it earns a point for being my third Emily, and my first where I could actually see the FB!

Parked at the gate at the start of the track, Followed track then small diversion into the wooded area, pillar sits well hidden in the undergrowth but in excellent condition with all its metal work

(3017) Parked by the entrance on Witcham Road, and walked down to the pillar. Easily found despite vegetation taking hold. Nice to bag another Project Emily pillar. Which is in good overall condition. Mepal North missing.

Parked on the A142. Took the public right of way (PRoW) from there up to the pillar, which can be found on the north east side of the PRoW, at the junction with a footpath which heads north east. Third Project Emily pillar which I have seen, and the first that is still in situ. This was the site of RAF Mepal, which opened in June 1943, and which was used to prepare Lancaster bombers squadrons for use in Tiger Force which was to bomb targets in Japan in the lead-up to the Allies' proposed invasion of Japan. Tiger Force was disbanded after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought the war against Japan to a close. RAF Mepal became a Thor Missile site in 1957. The Thor WS-315A missile system was a 1,500 miles intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), designed to deliver atomic thermonuclear warheads in to the Soviet Union during the Cold War. RAF Mepal was closed in 1963, when the Thor Missile System gave way to the V-Bomber. Most of the former RAF base is now occupied by the Elean business park.

Parking at the gate on the W side of the road then cross the road, onto path/old road, Pillar good condition (although it looks to getting a crack through the centre) located in scrub to the E of the marked ROW.

Interesting only because of its reason for existing, unfortunately nothing to see of the Thor installations or anything much of the old airfield.

My first visit to see an Emily! My SatNav sent me up to the northern end of the track for some reason. Drove back and parked on the verge for the quick visit to this unusual trig. Thanks for adding it to the database.

A project Emily pillar, E side of old road by entrance to old airfield. The O and S have been neatly ground off the FB (Emilys were built by MoD not OS) and the metal cap is channelled but without the usual Ordnance Survey etc lettering. FB was a surprise - all Emily records or found FBs to date have been S98xx or S95xx. Forgot to get photo of top face but it has typical recessed loops. Surprising this one hasnt already been picked up on as its by a well used path and must be well known locally. Mepal North is recorded as having been at TL 44629 80114(approx 300m NNE) but no trace of it, in open weedy ground. Could be (e.g) in scrub to E but there is (unusually for these sites) no airfield debris around and I assume all was carted offsite after the site was decommissioned in the 1960s. Nice to find one of the pair though, and in excellent condition.
