After our really informative visit to St George’s Barracks, we followed the directions provided by the lovely lady in reception to get onto the adjoining airfield and as expected from MOD personnel, her instructions were absolutely spot on. From Welland Road take the left at the hanger and past the stables onto the disused airfield, due to the many potholes she advised adhering to a 2 mph speed limit. Found the trig very easily by driving around the perimeter road on the grassed area. It was slightly damaged on the corner but had a clear flush bracket, in tact spider and brass hoops.

Parked at the end of the lane that runs past Wytchley Warren Farm and using GPS walked fairly swiftly and reasonably directly first to the broken Trig Point and then on to this one as I didn't feel it wise to hang around too long. We were spotted, but not challenged, by GOMLs walking their dog on the old airfield; an admonishing note of disapproval was taped to the window of the van when we returned to it. I'd recommend future visitors exercise a little more stealthy-ness and bit less brazen-ness than we did! The trespass-y nature of the area added a certain frisson to the visit but its just an old airfield for goodness sake. Pillar gets an extra point for interesting lichens on it.

GOML Managing to be simultaneously polite and peeved. At least I know how to spell 'Access' correctly.

With the impending doom and redevelopment of MOD North Luffenham I decided to visit the two project Emily trigs that are located on the old RAF Airfield. I know the Thor launch site has been granted a listed status and so is protected from the initial strip mining and subsequent construction into 3500 dwellings, but both of the trigs are a little distance away, so I'm not sure if they benefit from the same? Found the North trig without any problem, access was equally as easy and it was just a case of keeping clear of the model aircraft guys and trying to look un-phased by the scantily clad female sunbather. Trig is in pretty good condition, the top NW corner of it is crumbling away and you can see the construction of the spider exposed. Top is plugged and the OS letters on the ID plate have been chiselled off (although the O and S are still clearly visible). Jono
Damage to NW corner of trig Looks like to has taken a whack at some point in the past and the elements have down the rest.

After being given clear instructions from the guard on the base I drove into the the housing estate, through the golf course and as far as I could to a barrier and parked. I then walked the 700m across the airfield to the trig. Very interesting spot with all the military bits and bobs. Flush bracket nearly buried, dug out as best I could.

Some damage to top, otherwise good condition. Intact cap. Escorted to the 2 Emily pillars at the time as the one on the camp.

Joint visit with Carole. After being guided to the pillar (10863) in the adjacent military base we had been offered a visit to this one too. So, we actually drove to this one! Slightly sunken but the flush bracket number is still just visible. Apart from loss of concrete from a top corner the pillar is in quite good condition and still retains an original raised letter plug. Something of a novelty visit hence the high mark.

Great find!! - what an interesting place! - I have to say I felt that I was going to be arrested at any time by the Military Police, it looks like it was left in a hurry with all sorts of stuff lying around, Jets, Vehicles and Bombs! - loved it :) - Pillar in recently harvested hay field - slightly damaged at the top, very different views. I parked at the dead end lane to the North East and stepped over the very low fence once you have ignored the tresspassing and official secrets acts signs it is a straightforward walk across to the pillars.

Easily seen from the southern former taxi way in the area of grass. Can see the remains of a phantom jet with its side engine intakes and inclined up wings. The upper northern corner of the pillar is showing signs of damage from weathering. Flush bracket is becoming difficult to see as the soil level rises.
Easily seen and accessed

Project Emily pillar, on old airfield, in meadow area N of runway. One corner chipped. Metal cap, wide raised lettering. FB was slightly buried. The letters O and S have been roughly chiselled off (Emilys were built by MoD not OS) hence the OS-lettered cap is unusual (compare with North pillar) but not unknown.
