Bumped into the farmer when we approached the driveway who kindly granted permission to visit the trig. She seemed happy to allow access provided that people ask first. The trig is located within a cow field, which is accessed via a very muddy entrance. Definitely recommend wellies for this, though we just about coped in walking boots. The heifers were extremely friendly - they did surround us at the trig and gave us a lick, but weren't at all aggressive. Some nice views across the field.

In number terms converted to birthdays 1/6/62 is Marilyn Monroe's final living trig pillar on her 'Birthday Trig Walk of Life' two months before she died... It felt poignant. And in the Midlands here, it's the last of four sets of four that started with her eighth birthday trig, the rescued trig to the east, S1634 that was on the site of the construction of the M1 Donnington park services but now sitting at 20 Clement Gate, Diseworth, rescued by the owner Jim Snee and parked at the front of his drive.

Return visit after being denied access by the farmer in Sept 2015 due to cattle being TB inoculated. Unfortunately no response at the door on this occasion so we decided against walking through the farm yard, plenty of signs indicating uninvited visitors not welcome - hence we withdrew to review Plan B. Parked up on Derby rd and used a small access track N of the school, three fields and a few cows and we made the TP. Good concrete base still exposed around the pillar. Quick log, light fading retreated back down the fields. Good end to the day in completing South Derbyshire Grp of Trigs.

Felt bad about visiting this one as no one around to ask permission. Required a wade through cowsh and mud assisted a little by a few only just submerged bricks. Set on concrete plinth, surprisingly good view point. Towering anvil shaped cumulus, blue skies, sunshine, cold.

I’d come armed with my new wellies for this one – knocked at the doors with no response so I jumped the gate into the farmyard and waded through the slurry. Thought I’d got away without being seen but the ‘friendly farm lady’ was just returning home – I stopped her on the drive and explained what I’d been up to – she just smiled and said I was welcome. An extra point for the friendly farm lady and better than expected views.

Pillar itself is in pleasant location near the edge of an open field, and is in good condition except for Plug replaced by tarmac. FB S1662. Excellent GPS reception - clear signal from 12 satellites. Clear sunny day with nice views in most directions, including over A50/A6 junction. Found a somewhat drier and cleaner route avoiding farmyard to get back to the road!

I gained permission from farm before going to take a closer look at this trig. I was warned that it was very muddy on the approach but it was in fact ankle deep in what comes out the back of a cow. The trig point looks well. I ducked under a fence to avoid the cow muck on my return but seriously split my trousers in doing so! This meant a trip to Asda to buy a new pair before returning to work! Caught the whiff of cow manure whilst waiting to pay. Those of you who want to avoid such adventures can see the trig point from afar at the top of the farm drive or alternatively, if you are a passenger in a car, leave the A50 westbound at the A6 Derby turn and on the slip road look south over your shoulder.
