Picked the terrier up from the kennels and decided to tick some Birketts off at the Back of Skiddaw (5). I parked at the very sharp bend in the road and walked up to the pillar. Things have changed from my map to present day and the mast had grown to rocket size, felt rather uncomfortable and alien in the swirling cloud. The pillar can be seen east of the mast and very safe. Remember Golden Wonder crisps, remember Smokey Bacon? Well still going strong and 39p at Home Bargains for a 1970s size packet. This pillar is for things that do not change... the weight/content still under present day crisps.... not a bit like people :-))

Midnight visit with a good cover of freshly fallen snow on the ground. Red light of the transmitter mast certainly quite eerie in the thick fog. Trig pillar still seems to be in a good condition underneath the layer of snow.

A bit of a wet day in the central Lakes so headed towards the Solway Plain and the northern edge to knock off the northernmost Birkett (Green How - Aughertree Fell) and this TP. Parked up by the bend in the road and walked up the gated road to the mast area where the pillar came into view. Followed some quadbike tracks through the soggy moorland over to the pillar. Great views all around.

Drove up the road to the telecommunications tower. As you get to the highest part of the road, you can see the trig over to the east. The ground is a bit uneven to walk over it and looks like it could be a bit boggy in wetter weather. Great views all around apart from the telecommunications tower to the north.

Loved the evening sunlight on the back of Skiddaw and the golden glow over the Solway Firth. Most of all, doing my first pillar after recovering from Covid, it was just good to be alive.

A late winter afternoon and the last of 3 trigs today turned out to be spectacular due to the fantastic sunset. The transmission station is huge and provides an eerie backdrop taking the mark to an 8 for scenery.

Well i never this was a surprise thought I had done all the trigs in the area have not many with left to do in Cumbria but missed this one.Furthermore my young mate who was with me told me it was in the LDNP so it was the last one of the lakes trigs which i thought i had completed a few years ago.Walked up from bottom as a load of families had blocked the road out sledging on the slopes below trig in vgc fine views first pillar since september for me>

Regular route. All gates unlocked so I could have driven but wouldn't have been much quicker with all the stop/start routine; and would have missed the excellent views to Skiddaw and beyond on the descent.

Same parking / route as other visitors. Planned on doing some of the higher peaks today but lots of snow above 500 metres so stuck to the lower hills. Good start.

In works van,so drove straight up track to pillar.Padlocks have gone off the gate,but gate near pillar needs to be slid across to one side.Pillar in good condition,no sight holes open and cap fitted with raised lettering.Excellent 360° views,apart from mast!

HISTORY: Pillar completed 18th April 1952 costing £22.10s.0d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NY45/T3 in 1953. Levelled for height in 1971. Last maintained by the OS in March 1977. SITE VISIT: Approached from SSW. Parked by gates at NY264392. Straight up mapped track, no problems with access. Rough grazing land. Pillar in good condition. Spider has replacement OS centre cap with raised small letters. Flush bracket faces east, ~79°. Vented through west sight hole. Views include Cold Fell Pike, Skiddaw, Binsey, Criffell.

Private land, though signs are misleading. Parked car at bottom and nipped up side of plantation. Nice views S. Trig right next to large mast. Met farmer on way down. Apologised sweetly!
