Parked on Maes Mawr Road, Crynant and took the circuitous forestry tracks route through Crynant Forest to reach Mynydd Marchywel. From here the tracks took a more direct route northward to Varteg Hill – fantastic views from here. Walked back down to Crynant and up the other side of the valley following St Illtyds Way to reach the pillar at Penybegwyn, and back to Crynant. Out for seven hours, just over six hours of walking. An easy walking day albeit a bit tiring. Parts of the forest monotonous.

approached from Marchywel to south. Easy to find, prominent next to twin masts, excellent views in sweep across Black Mountain tops, Fans, to high Beacons. Descended to Ystalyfera on zig zag tracks, must have taken wrong exit track to road as final gate had unfriendly access signs and howling dogs over adjacent fence.

From Crynant, did the tump Mynydd Marchywel North Top first, then out to NW edge of forest and over open ground to the trig on N side comms compound on a small hill. Nice spot with extensive views over valley conurbations. Good forest roads and tracks, not all of them mapped. Pillar wears an old coat of white paint; top cap has gone, replaced with mortar plug; all sight holes open. 6 mile round trip.

I didn't know the best way to approach this one and in hindsight picked a bad route. We parked in the entrance to Crynant Forest on the Rhos Common road. We followed a forest track uphill for a while but this started to descend again so I headed up through the forestry (very steep and dificult) while Shane headed back to the car. After eventually reaching the trig it offered spectacular views North towards Mynydd Du and Fforest Fawr. The trig is next to a couple of small masts so there should be a lot easier way to access it. Tarmac plug.
