Walked from car park at south end of Mutter’s Moor on north side of road at top of hill after heading west out of Sidmouth. Over road onto footpath heading south then south west to join the South West Coast Path. Path loses height then narrow between hedge and fence, then through gate over a short section of pasture through bottom of valley then gains height, through gate into woods, couple of gaps in tree line with good views to east of cliffs and recent cliff fall. Through woods until reaching a steep track uphill to south east. Well worn. Rewarding view from top which suddenly opens out. Cap missing. Graffiti on pillar annoying enough (will eventually wash away) but FB also etched which is a permanent disfigurement and even more annoying. Excellent views although not completely clear at the time as quite overcast and murky. Quiet time of year though. Probably heaving in the summer.

Had passed under the pillar several times during the latter stage of Sidmouth Saunter challenge walks but never been up to the pillar before. Nice to see such a fine vantage point, looking over the deep red cliffs of the Triassic coastline merging in the far east into white chalk. Now off to Sidmouth for a pasty.

Wow. From Mutter's Moor car park all the way to the trig, there is no part of this one mile walk which isn't absolutely beautiful in all directions. The "steep path" up to the pillar is extremely well named; my head for heights really isn't that great sometimes, and it was a bit of a challenge to scramble up the loose, rocky incline. Up was easier than down - ascended on my feet (with the aid of a walking stick); descended part of the way on my backside! I'm still in one piece, though, and I got to experience the truly astonishing view from the pillar. Easily the most memorable trigpoint I've yet visited, and in spite of a touch of vertigo (or maybe because it didn't stop me), my favourite pillar to date. 10/10, no question.

Walked along the South West Coast Path, couldn't find an obvious branch leading to the pillar. Close look at 1;25000 back in car seems to show the pillar below an embankment at the top High peak.

We planned on doing this one yesterday afternnon but the weather was foul by 15.00. We would only just have missed Snells Pace - another 'near miss'. We did it first thing this morning and what a difference a day makes! Glorious sunshine if still a bit nippy. The trig is on the topmost point of the cliffs and the last 100 yds at the top were a bit too exposed for Shane's liking but she made it in the end. Excellent views towards Sidmouth. Plug missing.

A glorious day and a glorious view. Bagged while visiting friends in Sidmouth. No right of way on map but a clear, small track leads over a trampled fence; up through the trees on top of the cliff.
