Pulled into Newton St Loe, the village looks so traditional and so perfect it felt a bit odd, made me think of film "village of the damned". Now I see that majority of it is owned by Duchy of Cornwall, which explains a few things. Crossed the main road and along the lane to the pillar behind the "hedge", maybe its the time of year but the hedge was more gaps than hedge.

Trig easily found by going round edge of field NOT the lane as it's on the other side of the bramble hedge! There are some gaps in the hedge but depending on time of year could be very difficult to get through. Seems to have been cut back recently so trig is clear to see :) highly recommend a stop at the nearby farm shop cafe!

About quarter of a mile south east of roundabout junction of A4 and A39 pulled over on east side of road almost at brow of hill at entrance to track bridleway heading east. Hoping for an easy find. Walked east along lane for about 100 metres, no obvious sign or way through hedge into field on the other side. Squeezed through scratchy bushes and nettles on south side into overgrown orchard or young tree plantation. Trudged through long grass to west then back again to east. Checked on here for help. Should be close to hedge, quite overgrown at this time of year. Checking slowly along the hedge line spotted top of pillar peeping through vegetation. A bit of tidying up. Slightly damaged top. Spider and cap in place. Views limited but in plain view of house to west of road. Way back was through a low small hole in bush almost next to the pillar, then counted 85 paces back to the roadside verge. Afterwards called in at Newton Farm, about 250 metres away, for tea and cake.

Even then, it was a struggle. The pillar was almost totally obscured by ivy but fortunately, the ivy was easy to push away to allow a photograph of the top. The pillar is in good condition and complete with all it’s metalwork. The centre plug, unusually, had no engraving on it. The mist had started to clear, allowing a reasonable view to the north.
