First outing on the Lake Vyrnwy 239 OS map...A five trig 'assault' on Moel Bentyrch, Y Golfa, Cae Bardd, Allt y Main & Mynydd y Glyn. For Moel Bentyrch parked off-road at GR 05749 08866 aside the entrance to the Four Crosses & crossing the A458 'took' the bridleway to the river. Crossing a planked footbridge on the right, 'jumped' a gate on the left to proceed steeply uphill 'jumping' several barbed-wire fences en-route to the trig. Looked & felt like a 'real mountain', extremely steep by direct ascent, requiring some degree of care on coming down with much reliance on keeping in the heather for security. For Y Golfa parked off-road in the lay-by afront the Sylfaen sign GR 17593 06487 & crossing the A458 & stile & 'jumping' a gate proceeded steeply uphill to locate the trig aback of the golf course. For Cae Bardd speaking to David at Pentrego Farm en-route to Bronheul, fortuitously for me Robert from Bronheul passed by & gave me permission to park in his yard & access the trig. Parking up at GR 18872 12447, knocking to inform Robert's wife as to permission granted, Alexandra was most pleasant to chat to. 'Jumping' the gate in the yard & climbing the grassy embankment another steep ascent to locate the trig in a small gated enclosure of daffodils. Whilst at Pentrego Farm David asked did I know what the up-arrowed mark was in the brickwork of his property...OS benchmarking for recording height I replied. For Allt y Main accessed a small parking area at the end of a t-junction at GR 15843 14338 having first disembarked the car to open a gate.'Taking' the path North-East & going thro' a metal kissing-gate at GR 16144 14590, proceeded steeply uphill direct & rough initially before 'homing-in' on the ridge path. Followed the ridge path all the way back to the initial gate on descent. For Mynydd Glyn originally first off but done last consequence of last minute decision on doing the drive furthest from home first, parked on road at GR 15467 22029 to the right of a run-down barn & sheepfold. Not the best of parking places but there was enough room left for passing traffic to get by, the road was a quiet one & the up & down a quickie. 'Jumping' the roadside barbed-wire fence proceeded steeply uphill to locate the trig left of another barbed-wire fence. Out at 05:40 & back in post a 199.9 mile 'round trip' from Salford, Manchester at 15:15. A relatively easy day in terms of parking & access, plenty'a narrow pot-holed, rutted & central reservationed with grass lanes to contend with but most of all a day seriously under-estimated with reference to the physical effort needed in 'bagging' these five somewhat steeply sited trigs...a tough 'en. Just Rhialgwm & Tyddyn Amlwg to complete the Lake Vyrnwy & Llanfyllin 239 OS map, two longer walks but hopefully get-able in a mornings outing.

Pillar in vgc. think id have been "slightly damaged" had I lingered though.

An absolutely stunning day for visiting this HuMP hilltop. I was over this way to tidy up on three of my remaining Clwyd pillars. This was the smallest of the trio, yet I was mightily impressed by the intimacy of these lower hills, hence the perfect score. The next one would be Mynydd Mawr after stopping off for lunch at picturesque Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.

The pillar stands on the grassy summit of a hill to the north east of Llanfyllin. I parked on the verge of the minor road to the south west. The field side track was followed for 120 metres until breaks in the hedge allowed access to the field that includes the summit and the trig. There are some swirling graffiti scratched on the side of the pillar. There is some crazing on the top surface screed. It has a metal cap with shallow lettering and FB S4727. The Berwyns rise up to the north. Green rolling hills are to the east and the Shropshire Plain stretches into the distance. The Breiddens, the Long Mountain and Corndon Hill can be seen to the south. Higher mountains can be seen in the distance to the south west. Mist was rolling down the valley from the high moorland in the north west.
