I must have been here in the past but couldn't say when, not in recent years anyhow. I made a late decision to have an evening walk up to it as the weather was forecast sunny, and was treated to a nice sunset. A nice moat around it still but a peaceful spot.

Parked in Crowdon car park. Took the public right of way (PRoW) / track from the car park up through the quarry and up to the summit of Hey Edge and the pillar. The track does not alway follow the PRoW, but it is a well defined track which is straight forward to follow. However, it is very boggy in the latter stages, and the pillar was surrounded by a virtual moat. Not sure why this is described as slightly damaged, because it looks fine to me. The climb to the summit involves a 200 metre ascent from the car park

Thank you to Sue & Sam who can be found on the Web, Facebook & Utube with their outdoor adventure site, Backpacks & Bruises. I hiked the Crowden Horsehoe with them, experiencing some fantastic views and two trig points including this one. For me it was a revisit, taking the opportunity to remember our friends and neighbours in the Ukraine.

It's a long time since I have walked the Crowden Horseshoe and visited this trig. A path goes straight to the trig (W of quarries). A lot of surface water and there was a moat surrounding it, so take peoples word that it is damaged...more like neglected. I visited 3 today which are gifted to the gear you find whilst on the hills, a mug, Sealskinz hat and a pair of socks this week.

Not sure what path other baggers have followed but I didn't find this so easy. Headed up from Crowden round the back of disused quarrt then off piste via bearing up to the trig. It has been logged by previous baggers as slightly damaged but I could no see any visible damage. The base is exposed due to water and mud surrounding the trig. But trig looks fine. On circular walk from Crowden to Black Hill / Holme Moss. Bright white coat of paint provided a beacon from some distance across the featureless, boggy moorland. Pillar has a slight lean rearward and to the right; exposed foundations; and very pitted concrete, presumably weather action. Otherwise good. Also cap missing, composite plug; 3 sight hole open, rear sealed. 360deg views. NB. Pillar wasn't used by the OS hence not recorded on mapping and not in the OSGB36 list.

Walked up from Crowdon car park using PROW past the old stone quarry. Trig stands out nicely with its relatively new coat of paint. So navigation made easy. Trig has its own little moat but two stepping stones on the FB face side minimises submerging the boots when getting the grid ref. Walked on up to Holme Moss on a lovely day despite the cold Westley wind.

Not convinced I followed the mapped PROW. Followed an obvious path up to the disused quarry from Crowden car park. Eventually picked up another path which wound its way around the back of the quarry before a final, more gentle climb onto Hey Edge. Pillar quickly came into view once on the top and then it was simply a case of finding the driest route to it. Surprised to find condition listed as slightly damaged. Yes, its surfaced is somewhat gnarled but I've seen others with obvious cracks / lumps missing / partially exposed spiders which are recorded as being in good condition !! Pillar itself is surrounded by a moat that I was just about able to stride. Original cap has been replaced by plastic. Took some snaps in lovely early evening sunlight then followed my footsteps back down to Crowden.

Out with my walking group - The Irregulars, LDWA - doing a walk that our leader had titled A Tig Point Trilogy. We would visit this, Holme Moss and Cock Hill on our journey. Actually been here on numerous occasions but not since I started 'recording'. Marvellous day out here today blue skies and sunshine and wonderful conditions underfoot. Never known it so dry. Pillar in good condition with small - at the moment - bridgable moat. My GPS gave me a gird reference of SE 08034 00454 which might be useful on a misty day but you are unable to miss it on a day like today.

Ah, the walk up from Crowden was quite sad as I saw across the valley, the path up to Laddow marked with stations of the cross in my mind, culminating with the point where I decided if I didn't get on the plane I would regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of my life. Anyway. Another brilliant sunny day and the dry weather meant the bog wasn't a problem. In fact the pillar now sits on a very quiet green hillside. (Quiet apart from the bloody guns across Longdendale.) I felt compelled to sit on top of it for ten minutes just to take in the tranquility. Hey. You can just about see my house from here. Well, ... The Mudd ... and its neigbouring farms. Sigh! (Is that how it got its name :) ) Thanks for pointing this one out to me.

Wlked up from Crowden, looks like someone had been wild camping in old quarry, pity they had left their litter behind. [tossers]

Passed on the 4 Inns Walk, I thought something was odd about it not being on the map - but for it to be a rarity! Didn't seem too boggy, but new Gore-Tex lined boots probably helped with that! Walked along the ridge from Black Top, and down into Crowden via the quarry. 4 Inns Team no 46, Imperial College Fellwanderers "Balins Crew"

The given coordinates are clearly wrong. How do they get updated to a correct value?

Missed this one when I did Holm Moss and Featherbed Moss - I must have passed by it (300m) at least three times during my walking years. Very booggy area. Came up through the quarry from Crowden

This Trig seemed lonely as the footpath didn't seem well used gave the Trig a quick cuddle to reassure it that there are people out there that love Trigs. Fantastic walk from Crowden Car park and great view throughtout the walk.

A nice walk up from Crowden. Not sure on the grid ref though. The map on the link has it in a different place.

Soggy rather than boggy approach to this pillar from Crowden. As suggested, I gave it a quick cuddle, bless it. Surrounded by large defensive puddle. Good views in all directions even with the cloud layer at about 1800 feet.

Surface spalling a little, plastic cap. Initially fooled by the old SE 080 001 grid ref - found it further along the path. Fine scenic climb up from Crowden, view from trig nice enough. Not a route I'd followed before.

This one was visited as part of a ranger led 3 trig challenge walk.Constructed in 1940, it is unusual in that it is not shown as a blue triangle on the os map. Although an OS built pillar, observations were never taken from it. This information was obtained from a handout, thanks to the Ranger. A highly reccommended walk if you see it advertised in the Peak District booklet. It certainly helps to have ranger leading the way! Grid reference and photos added on 02/08/14 whilst on our High Peak weekend with the East Staffs ramblers.

Visited on the way back from Black Hill by way of Tooleyshaw. Goretex lined boots cannot cope with this terrain - suggest wellies next time. OS never used this one & I cannot help feeling sorry for it stuck in the middle of this God-forsaken moor without having served any useful purpose. Go on, visit it & give it a cuddle.

One of my National Park ranger colleagues wrote to the OS about this trig, as it appears on the map as 'pillar' even though it is a obviously a trig point. Seemingly the OS built it but it was never actually calibrated and put into use, so it isn't registered as a trig. I believe there is only one other such trig pillar in the UK.
