My third visit, an appointment at the RVI gave a chance to photo the Active Station almost directly above this wee pillar, and take a GPS reading of it...which proved to be oddly and wildly inaccurate! ~~ 27/07/21 Somehow managed to struggle to find it from where I ended up having to park, and wandered around half of the University and the RVI before getting my bearings. THEN had a nightmare trying to remember where I'd parked the bloody car. Got myself in such a fettle I forgot to bag the Active Station round the corner, or the Civic Centre Vane which we walked past on at least a couple of occasions...

A day trip to this city on a train and a retrospective log. As others mention this is an odd one. The spider is wrong and seems a tribute rather than genuine? But have logged for fun and had a great day out. Not on OS digital maps. The course in the photo looks interesting!

I really don't know what to make of this one. The "Pillar" standing by the door is a replica but it seems that the original location was more or less the same. There was a suggestion that it was originally on the roof. That would make sense as the views from the ground would have been non existent as the surrounding buildings are long established, but would that have been a concrete pillar? Whatever the history is, I've marked it as "Destroyed".

A great one to add to the pillar collection, and a "cuckoo in the nest" comes to mind. Over thought it's location and it is actually adjacent to a side entrance door on the Bedson building. Gifted to all the waymarking on the HWP, it would be possible, but not recommended, to do the trail without a map.

As I'm the person who installed the Pillar outside the University Building, of the then Department of Surveying, I can cast some light on it's history. The pillar was cast by the Mining Department ( no longer exists ) lay at the back of the Drummond Building. The flush bracket was donated by the OS and I made a hole in the pillar with a windy pick and used some fast drying cement to fix the flush bracket. This was put in the flower bed and planted with heathers to mark the entrance to the surveying department. We have since moved and we are now Geomatics at Newcastle based in the Cassie Building, as part of Civil Engineering and Geosciences.

It's currently a psuedo trig I suppose but no less worthwhile given it's history - see RoPeHe's log which tells you everything you need to know and where to find it's current location (nice log mate). I'm giving this a score of seven. Mainly for two reasons, firstly for simply surviving and secondly in reward for whoever made the decision to 'save' a redundant pillar, good on ya mate!! I'd have liked it a bit more prominant personally, perhaps on the west side of the building adjacent the main road but I'm nit-picking. The railings get in the way of a better photo but the yellow poppies were in flower today and looked nice around the 'trig'.

Pillar slimmer than standard; small spider without centre hole; FB 12327 (which will throw a few spanners into the works!); good condition. In a tiny garden plot adjacent to the N face of the Bedson Building (location of the erstwhile Department of Geomatics). Presumably erected by or for said department. Would be useless for triangulation! Adjacent to the (signed) C137 road for any C-road hunters, by the way. I saw this described as "redundant trig pillar" in some Department of Geomatics document some years ago, but I cannot now find the reference. If I can relocate said document, it might give a more accurate location. NOT the same thing as active station NEWC (A1NZ2465) which already exists on the T:UK database as TP7287, which is presumably on the wall or roof more or less directly above the pillar, though I could not see it. Postscript: I have since had confirmation from the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Newcastle University that this pillar was installed in its present location, largely as a decorative feature, in around 1991, using a redundant pillar that had at one time been on the roof of one of the buildings, with the addition of a genuine Flush Bracket obtained through a contact with the OS!
