After ringing first in chamber, popped on up the spiral staircase to the roof to enjoy a beautiful view today, could even seen the Three Buses/The Clumps 20 miles away on the ridgeway, clearly. Picture taken of one of gargoyles which is more fun than the flagstaff.

Parish Church of St John the Baptist, Grade I listed building, originally 12thC with additions over the centuries. Free-standing tower erected 1400 - it contains a miniature replica of the Big Ben clock, and was the first church in Britain to have a peal of 12 bells. Visited today and fortunate enough to get a personal guided tour of the tower.

Previously logged 23 May 2012 as a view from ground level. This time I went up the tower of my home town parish church for the first time to see the flagstaff close at hand. The tower is open to the public for only 5 or 6 days a year (entry £3). A very narrow spiral staircase leads up the tower past the bell-ringing chamber, the clock mechanism room and the bell chamber. The flagstaff sits in the centre of the roof and doubles as a low-powered (10W) radio transmitter broadcasting BBC Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4 to the Cirencester town area. 1.7m WSW along the ridge of the roof is a bolt (TP12399).

I've visited my home town parish church many times, but this log date was the first visit after the addition of the flagstaff to the database. This was the occasion of the Olympic Torch Relay visiting Cirencester - a baking hot May afternoon and in the company of about 9,000 other people in the town centre as the torch passed through just before 4pm. My first visit here would have been 24 June 1984 on the occasion of my Christening in the church. The bunting was up in the Market Place then too! I stayed at ground level this time but there is also a bolt (TP12399) on top of the tower which is open to the public 5 or 6 days a year.
